On Saturday, March 4, 2017, Tanque Verde High School Mock Trial students competed at the Regional Mock Trial Tournament at the Superior Court House in downtown Tucson.
Through the Mock Trial Program, participating students have the opportunity to argue realistic, fictional cases in real courtrooms, in front of practicing attorneys and judges. Mr. Jeremy Samoy, TVHS Social Studies Teacher and Mock Trial Program Sponsor, brought four teams to the competition, where they competed in a field of 15 teams overall. Tanque Verde faced several area schools in the competition, including the Gregory School, Basis Oro Valley, Basis Tucson North, University High School (UHS), and Desert Christian High School.
The four Hawks Mock Trial teams represented Tanque Verde High School well. All teams were guaranteed four rounds in the competition. The TVHS Silver team went 1-3; the Black and White teams both went 2-2; and the Green team went 3-1, earning a berth in the final round. The Green team faced off against UHS in the final. They finished by winning 4th place overall!
Following the Regional Tournament, Mr. Samoy stated, “This is an amazing achievement, and I am very proud of our kids for getting to the final round. This is no small feat, and being that this was only the second year for my students to participate in Mock Trial, I am extremely pleased with the results from the tournament! We are still waiting on the final judgments from around the state to see if we will be invited to compete in the state competition in April in Phoenix.”
Two Tanque Verde High School Mock Trial students were also named to the All-Region team -Ainsley Malis and Emily Kimmins. “This was a huge honor for these two girls,” said Mr. Samoy, “They were recognized by the judges for their outstanding performance and were a part of the top eight (8) performers at the tournament! These two individuals demonstrated a level of excellence and preparation that warranted acknowledgement by the judges at the tournament.”
We are also very proud to announce that the Arizona Foundation for Legal Services and Education, which hosts the mock trial tournament, presented a much deserved award to Mr. Samoy for his extra commitment and dedication to the program.
Mr. Samoy organized a preseason mock trial tournament in November for novice mock trial teams to practice before the regional tournament. The award also recognized our program’s mission of expanding the Tucson region by mentoring new schools. Mr. Samoy and individuals involved in the TVHS program helped Desert Christian High School develop their mock trial program by mentoring their students and staff as they entered the world of mock trial.
Overall it was an outstanding day for Hawk's Mock Trial!
As an update, the TVHS Mock Trial Team has now been invited to compete at the State Competition on Saturday, April 1st in Phoenix! Congratulations and good luck to these dedicated students in this high level competition!
