Tanque Verde School District's Community Programs are growing!

Recent changes to the structure of the Tanque Verde Unified School District’s Community Programs for Youth and Adults, has allowed for new classes and program growth.

With both the youth and adult community programs now fully incorporated under the district’s administrative oversight, the program coordinator’s have the support needed to create new programs and strengthen those already in place. Students have benefited from these changes with more course offerings and options.

At the recent TVUSD Governing Board meeting, highlights of both programs were presented by the program coordinators, and board members toured the Lew Sorensen Center for a first hand look at the facility. Youth programs instructors and students were also in attendance to share perspectives on their respective programs.

Tanque Verde Youth Programs

Program Coordinator, Lindsey Kowalski

Ms. Lindsey Kowalski was hired as the Youth Programs Coordinator this school year, after working very successfully as a program instructor. By bringing the youth programs fully under the umbrella of the school district, and with Ms. Kowalski’s energetic leadership, the district has been able to expand course offerings and incorporate additional community partners into the program. With the support of the district’s transportation department, courses are now also offered in coordination with Forty Niner Golf and Fitness.

Youth Programs classes are available for students in grades K-12, and include courses in art, foreign languages, martial arts, photography, dance, a variety of sports and fitness classes, cooking and personal finance.  Ms. Kowalski encourages parents and guardians to share their ideas, and to provide feedback on ways in which the program can better serve the community and increase opportunities for our students. She also welcomes those with hobbies, skills or talents they would like to share, to contact her about offering additional classes (all levels).

Program Coordinator, Karen Reifschneider

The Lew Sorensen Center building, which houses the Adult Education Program, was constructed with funds provided by the passage of a bond in 2009. During the subsequent years from 2011-2019, the program has grown to offer as many as 16 adult leisure classes per quarter, with diverse offerings, including beginning and advanced classes in wheel and handbuilt pottery, tile and mosaics, loom weaving and fiber arts, polymer clay art, fine arts including oil and watercolor painting, and yoga.

Ms. Karen Reifschneider, the Adult Community Programs Coordinator since its inception, noted, “The program has benefited from significant community donations of equipment, and the generous service of skilled volunteers.” Ms. Reifschneider also noted, “We are fortunate to have very talented, experienced instructors, many of whom are professional artists and artisans in our community.”

In addition to their creative pursuits, the adult program students and teachers are actively involved in community outreach projects, including the Empty Bowls Tucson project, which helps raise funds to feed the hungry in Tucson by creating and contributing handmade ceramic bowls; Little Dresses for Haiti, which provides handmade dresses for girls who may not otherwise have appropriate attire to attend school; and the Monarch Watch Project, an international effort to provide rest stops for monarchs during their migration. The building’s cheerful courtyard is a certified Monarch Watch Station. They also host an annual Mata Ortiz exhibition and sale to support indigenous artists.

Ms. Reifschneider encourages members of our community to try a class, experience something new, and develop connections with others in our community. There is truly something for everyone to enjoy.
