We are very pleased to recognize Tanque Verde Elementary School art teacher, Ms. Alicia Marrano, who has been named the 2018 Outstanding Elementary Art Educator Award from the Arizona Art Education Association (AAEA).
According to Ms. Pamela Stephens, AAEA Awards Chair, “Alicia’s service and teaching placed her as the top nominee for Outstanding Elementary Art Educator.”
In the nomination letter from a member of the AAEA, Ms. Marrano is commended for “her commitment to developing K-6 art curricula that are readily integrated into grade levels... in addition [to] her emphasis on ensuring the relevance of art education throughout interdisciplinary curriculum including science, language arts, social studies, mathematics, and technology [which] has been a fundamental character of her career. She is widely recognized for her role in promoting the importance of art throughout the community.“
Ms. Frances Verbois, Tanque Verde Elementary School librarian and Professional Development Coordinator, also recognized Ms. Marrano for her vision and collaboration. "Alicia is a truly gifted and dedicated educator with a vision for an exemplary, community based program," she said, adding, "Alicia is a delight to work with and she generously gives both her time and her heart and soul to any project she pursues."
Alicia welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with other teachers, and she takes a particular interest in making connections to STEAM, which allows her to develop a multi-disciplinary approach to her lessons. She sponsors a Garden Club, which incorporates science (ecosystems, butterfly life cycles), technology (using iPads for artistic development) and team-building. She also places a strong emphasis on student collaboration, encouraging older students to assist with younger children. Every week, Ms. Marrano organizes the Art Club student volunteers to help with multiple art-based activities, including campus beautification, art event preparation and digital art gallery uploads.
