Engaging programs, innovative teachers support student achievement in Tanque Verde schools- (cont.)

Portrait Svea AndersonMs. Svea Anderson is a 6th grade Science and Math teacher at Agua Caliente Elementary School in Tucson, Arizona. In addition to teaching sixth grade, Svea is also the Tanque Verde Unified School District’s STEM Coordinator, a Mentor Teacher for Pima County’s STEMAZing Project, and a Lead Ambassador for a collaboration between the Arizona Science Teachers Association and the Arizona Department of Education.

Ms. Anderson spent her summer in the Arctic Circle as a recipient of the highly competitive PolarTREC polar research expedition grant program. With additional assistance from a local grant from the Tanque Verde Foundation, she was able to create curriculum materials for elementary classrooms here in TVUSD, and our students had the opportunity to learn along with her while she was in the Arctic during the first days of school. When she returned, Ms. Anderson brought back samples from the Arctic for her classes to study, and her students participated in collecting and analyzing data for the Arctic research project from their classroom right here in Tucson.
