POLYMER CLAY
Instructor: Len Hughes
Cost: $130
Join the fun of learning to create one-of-a-kind items in polymer clay. Instruction will begin with the basics: conditioning the clay, making and blending colors and making different kinds of canes to be used in the jewelry making process. A variety of techniques will be employed to make each creation unique and individual. Please join us
to discover how creative and sophisticated this art form can be. Emphasis will be on making high quality jewelry and decorative items. Finished work will be processed in ovens provided.
Materials: Please bring several colors of clay (Premo and/or Sculpey recommended) in lights and darks as well as black and white, a roller, and a blade. If you have your own pasta machine, bring it, and we will have some available.

WEAVING II
Instructor: Melanie Abel
Cost: $130
For this session only, this class is for returning students only.
In this class the student will improve their knowledge of warping a loom, reading a draft, and general weaving vocabulary. The student will study and plan a project using a more complex weaving pattern, warp the loom using this pattern, and weave the project. They will learn more techniques and tricks that make weaving easier and fun. After weaving the project, the student will learn a variety of finishing techniques, including wet finishing
Class size is limited for purposes of safe social distancing and instruction is tailored to the individual’s experience and weaving interests. Weaving II is taught on either 4-harness floor or table loom. The warping direction is front to back.
Lab fee is $10 paid with class fee when registering for class.
Due to Covid-related restrictions students must now supply the following:
Sharp fabric scissors, measuring tape, calculator, pen, notebook paper, post-it notes, blue masking tape, hand sanitizer and wipes. Please mark all items with your name.
A copy of “A Handweaver’s Pattern Directory” by Anne Dixon is recommended.

POTTERY
Pottery classes at the Sorensen Tanque Verde Center provide adults in our community an opportunity to develop pottery skills in a positive, creative atmosphere with excellent instruction and state of the art equipment. The program is designed to encourage development of skill in different areas of ceramic art. As an educational facility, we will not support work completed at a production pace. Staff reserves the right to limit clay purchases to two bags per session.
A materials fee is included in fees at the time of class purchase for all pottery classes. No glazes, chemicals, or clay may be brought from outside to be used in this studio. A selection of clay bodies is available for purchase and glaze and decoration materials are available for student use. All classes will use cone 10 clay and glaze fired in a cone 10 reduction atmosphere. Clay is available for purchase online at the adult leisure program website and may be procured at the studio by showing a receipt to the instructor.
Students will supply tools for their own use.
Pottery classes this session will be limited to 6 students. COVID precautions will uniformly apply.

HANDBUILT POTTERY

Cost, $145
Learn basic techniques of slab, coil and pinch construction using the slab roller, clay extruder, molds and hand sculpting to make unique and creative clay objects. Glaze techniques and other surface decoration techniques will be demonstrated as well as various class projects using patterns and interesting textures.

TILE AND MOSAIC/ HANDBUILT POTTERY
Instructor: Julie stein

A class for those who aspire to learn the tile and mosaic process from start to finish. Planning, clay preparation, cutting and shaping, and glazing and decoration will be addressed. Students will learn the process of mounting and grouting to accomplish a completed project for a tabletop, wall hanging, backsplash, bench or wherever the artist’s creativity leads.

WHEEL POTTERY

Learn or practice wheel technique in a class offering general skill development for wheel throwers of all experience levels. Such topics as making matched sets, lids, rim treatments, altered forms, glazing, and use of alternative surface treatments will be explored.
