Welcome to English 11!!!!

Hello! Welcome to the world gone mad! Ok, it's not so bad, but we're obviously having to do things a little differently this year. Please read the letter below to get us started.
 Dear Students and Parents,

First and foremost, I hope this finds you safe and well! I realize times are stressful and uncertain, and that "normal" has kind of gone out the window. Please understand that as teachers we are doing our best to navigate our way forward, and help our students begin the year with confidence in this new online platform. Unfortunately, right now, things continue to remain in flux and will likely remain that way for a while. We will try to settle into a routine as best and as quickly as we can, but please be aware that things will almost certainly change as we move forward. I will do my very best to communicate clearly and in a timely manner.

This year, students will begin classes online using two main avenues of instruction. The first is Google Classroom. This will be students’ “home base” for my class; all information and assignments will be posted there, so it’s always the place they should start. This is also where they will go to join live class meetings. (There is a meeting link posted in the top left corner of the banner of each Classroom page.) Every student has been emailed an invitation to join classroom, but Classroom can also be accessed via a “class code”. Parents are welcome and encouraged to join Classroom either with the code or an invitation from their student. (Codes are available on the actual classroom page if your student is already in, or in a document on the Resource page of your Synergy/ParentVue gradebook.)

The second tool students will use heavily for instruction is Edgenuity. Edgenuity is the online curriculum/platform TVUSD has selected to support our online instruction. Students will receive log-in information for that in the coming days. Here, students can work through lessons and instruction on their own time. However, they are still expected to attend “live” classes with me according to the Virtual Learning Schedule distributed by the school.

Edgenuity will track students’ progress and provide a grade, however that grade ONLY indicates what a student has done in Edgenuity. It does not take into account assignments I will give through Google Classroom to supplement Edgenuity’s curriculum. Please be aware, a student’s grade in Edgenuity is NOT his/her grade in my class! Grades that include both work in Edgenuity AND work I assign in classroom will be in Synergy/ParentVue as usual. That is the grade that will accurately show how a student is doing in my class.

This year TVUSD has adopted REMIND as an official form of district communication. If you are not familiar, REMIND is a communication app that can be used on any device, and with your phone will work either through the app or simply through your text messaging. Students have been automatically invited to join individual classes through their school email. Like Classroom, I strongly encourage parents to join REMIND! It is a great way to stay up to date on what’s going on with some details of classes. I generally don’t use REMIND too heavily, so you won’t constantly be getting messages. Codes for REMIND will be posted along with codes for Google Classroom in Synergy, as well as given to students in the first few days of class.

Lastly, I know there’s still probably a lot more information you want/need. My goal here was to just get us started. Students will get lots of details in the coming days; please ask them questions! It helps you check if they’re paying attention, and will let me know if I’ve overlooked something. Of course, please feel free to email me with specific questions or concerns as well.

Take care! I hope to see you all sooner rather than later!
