Former University of Arizona Wildcats All-PAC-10 wide receiver,
Jay Dobyns, has been named head coach of the Tanque Verde High School football program. Coach Dobyns knows his way around the football, having played for the U of A, the Canadian Football League, and the USFL, and working for the past ten years as an assistant coach in the respected Salpointe Football program.
Tanque Verde High School Assistant Principal and Athletic Director, Mr. Gary Lewis, says he is “very pleased with the addition of Jay Dobyns to the Tanque Verde High School coaching staff. Jay brings with him a vast amount of football coaching and life experience and is eager to impact the mindset of our football program.”
There is a buzz surrounding the announcement of Coach Dobyns’ hiring. He is well respected in our Tanque Verde community, where he has been a long-time resident, and among fellow coaches and former U of A players whose ties run strong in the Tucson community. In his professional career, Jay Dobyns was an undercover federal agent for twenty-seven years before retiring in 2014, and he is now a nationally acclaimed public speaker.
“Coach Dobyns understands the importance of community involvement in the education of our student-athletes, says TVHS AD Gary Lewis. “He continues to surround himself with other high-caliber individuals; coaches who all bring the same infectious positive attitude he exhibits on a consistent basis. We are excited to have Jay Dobyns as our new Head Football Coach.”
"My objective as the Head Football Coach at TVHS,” stated Coach Dobyns, “is to promote excellence in our student-athletes by building trusted relationships between coaches, players and teammates that will impact and influence them for a lifetime."
Tanque Verde High School’s student population has grown considerably over the past several years, and with it has grown the TVHS Boys and Girls Athletics program. Notably, TVHS was awarded the AIA Division 1A-3A Tony Komadina Award for Outstanding Girls' Athletic Programs in 2019, and the AIA Glen Treadaway Sportsmanship Award in 2018.
