TVHS Mock Trial teams take first place Region 6A and 6B
Tucson, AZ - March 7, 2020

“Mock trial had a very long Saturday, leaving Tanque Verde High School at 5:45 a.m. and returning around 9:00 p.m., after a day filled with high level competition. But it was well worth it!” said TVHS Mock Trial teacher, Mr. Jeremy Samoy.

Tanque Verde High School took four teams to the Mock Trial Regional Tournament on Saturday, March 7, 2020. There were 21 teams at the tournament from different high schools around Tucson, including Basis North, Basis Oro Valley, Desert Christian, Empire, the Gregory School, Marana Mountain View, University High School, and Veritas Prep Academy.

Because there were a record number of teams entered this year, the region was split into two divisions, 6A and 6B. TVHS had two teams in each division and the TVHS Pink Team: Addison Goodman, Abby Gahr, Zoe Montano, Carly Huber, Jada Johnson, Emma Morris, and Bri Ede, won first place in region 6A; and the TVHS Black team: Emma Kalway, Karah Mayer, Ariana Velosa, Abby Roberts, Aidan Loomis, Ranger Stevenson, and Hyrum Lines, also won first place in region 6B!

Two other TVHS teams, the Green and White teams, also competed well throughout the day, getting some big wins and holding their own against some quality opponents. The Green team won 2 rounds and lost 2 rounds, and the White team won 1 round and lost 3 rounds.

This is a huge accomplishment for teacher Jeremey Samoy, and his Mock Trial students, and a first for the Tanque Verde Mock Trial Program. Previously their best showing was 2nd place at Regionals. In addition to the big wins, they had four students named to the All-Region team, for their outstanding individual performances throughout the day: Bri Ede, Addison Goodman, Aidan Loomis, and Joseph Jacobs.

Both the Pink and Black teams will now compete at the state tournament at the end of the month. The winner of the State Tournament is eligible to compete at the National High School Mock Trial Championship held in May in Phoenix, AZ.

According to LawforKids.org, “Recognized as one of the top programs in the country, Arizona has had teams place in the top ten several times in the National High School Mock Trial Championship, since our participation began in the 1980's.”

We wish all our TVHS Mock Trial students good luck as they move on to the state tournament!
